One of my clients was curious about Bing, their market share and if it would be a good investment from a SEM perspective. So what did I do? I Googled Bing (hehe!), did some research and played around on Bing for a while.
First off, I wanted to know Bing’s market share v. Google and others. I found that domestically in July 2009, Bing increased their market share by 1% to 9.41% compared to 8.23% in June 2009. Google was still strong at 77.54% in July compared to 78.48% in June. Google has an even larger market share internationally with 89.23% in July compared to 89.90% in June, and Bing with 8.77% in July compared to 8.45% in June.
It seems that they are still gaining market share, but this might be due to a couple things. One of them is possibly that Bing is still fresh. New users are still trying it out, deciding if it is worth the switch. Another reason is you better believe Microsoft is still pushing it heavily with marketing and PR. With all that promotion you’re bound to see an increase in usage.
Bing is pretty, but it’s just not as efficient when you know what you want to search for. I just don’t get why I’d want to see a picture of paper lanterns when they want to search for hair salons. It seems like a great way for people who are bored at work to waste their time. When I searched on Bing, my eyes didn’t know where to focus. I’m not sure if this is because I’m so familiar wtih Google - kind of like I know the layout of my local Trader Joe’s. My brain hurts just looking at Bing.
Right now, Google AdWords works for my clients. That’s not to say that Bing will come around and be a major threat to Google, but as a user myself, I wouldn’t want to try something new if the old way isn’t broken and the new way isn’t better.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Search Engine Marketing or Social Media, but is something fun I thought I’d try. And what better way to spread the word than through Social Media - so there. I guess I DID tie it in somehow!
